Excellent performance by the BUFF® Scott MTB Team at the Cape Epic 2017

Outstanding. This is how we would define the role of the two duos on the BUFF® Scott MTB team, made up of Ismael Ventura – Enrique Morcillo and Joan Llordella – Adrià Noguera, who were proclaimed best Spanish team yesterday in what is considered the world’s most renowned MTB race with the toughest stages: the Cape Epic (19–26 March, South Africa).

The team’s two duos had the same dynamic: Joan Llordella, an experienced biker and five-time finisher of this race; and Ismael Ventura, two-time finisher out of the three times he competed, who guided this year’s rookies, Adrià Noguera and Enrique Morcillo.

This combination of a seasoned rider with a young rider made it so that it didn’t take long to see good results and already in the 1st stage, Ventura and Morcillo achieved 11th place (102 km + 2600 m) riding with the leading group (and winner) Scott-SRAM Racing.

It was not easy to keep their place with top mountain bikers also pedaling hard: Manuel Fumic, Samuele Porro, Nino Schurter, Matthias Sitrnemann, Fabian Rabensteiner and the famous José duo. A. Hermida and Purito Rodríguez didn’t give up and pushed to achieve the best rankings.

Even then, in the third stage, Ventura and Morcillo stood out placing in the TOP10 and within minutes of their rivals. The duo made history again, as the first Spanish team fastest at the race and Joan Llordella and Adrià Noguera stayed around 18th place, as this edition’s second fastest national duo.

A broken chain made the Llordella – Noguera duo lose minutes during the fourth stage, the longest (112 km) and toughest for our bikers, with extreme temperatures during all of the race.

It is worth mentioning Ismael Ventura’s role. Despite being sick for the past two days, he, along with Morcillo, achieved staying in 12th place, the place which they had up until then, and continuing to ride together with the first leading group.

The seven stages of the Cape Epic (along with the prologue on Sunday) ended yesterday with a big victory for the Scott – SRAM Racing team and with the BUFF® Scott MTB team standing out as the great national team. Finally, the results of the overall ranking left the Ventura – Morcillo duo in 13th place and Llordella – Noguera in 24th.
